What’s hot at the Minamata COP?

The Conference of the Parties (COP) has a set agenda that is discussed by the countries involved in the COP. At the 2023 COP, the main focus at COP 5 will be…

Annex A - Mercury added products

Annex A of the Minamata Convention on Mercury is dedicated to mercury-added products. These products that are controlled by the Minamata convention and contain mercury intentionally added during their manufacturing or as part of their function. This annex is updated as parties decide to phase products out.

Annex B - Manufacturing processes

Industrial processes involving mercury can vary across different sectors and industries. Through Annex B, the convention aims to control and, if possible, phase out the use of mercury in these processes by promoting alternative methods, best available techniques and best environmental practices. It encourages the development and use of alternative technologies and processes that do not involve the use of mercury or use it in significantly reduced quantities.

Annex C -

Through Annex C, the Minamata Convention aims to reduce and, eventually, eliminate the use of mercury in Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and promote safer and more sustainable practices. It recognizes the importance of supporting the development of alternatives to mercury use in this sector so that local communities don’t loose their livelihood.
